What Impex does here

Auto glass work for south-east Charlotte

Five pages, one for each job this site covers in depth. Every one explains what happens to the vehicle, how long it takes and what to ask before you book.

How a job works

From the first call to driving away

Most windshield jobs take about an hour of work, plus a short wait before you drive.

  1. 01

    Tell Impex the vehicle

Send the form or call with the year, make and model, the damage and the VIN if you have it. The VIN is on the dash at the base of the windshield and on the driver’s door frame.

  2. 02

Get one quote for the whole job

Impex quotes the glass, the calibration if your vehicle needs it and the labour together, with no delivery, fuel or disposal fees added later.

  3. 03

    The work

The damaged glass comes out, the new part is set and bonded, and the sensors attached to it are reconnected. Cameras are calibrated when the vehicle requires it.

  4. 04

    Drive away

You are told when it is safe to drive. Impex says most cars are back on the road within two hours of a windshield; side glass can be driven straight away.

Choosing a company

How to choose an auto glass company in Charlotte

Search for an auto glass company in Charlotte and you get a page of national brands, a few local shops and a map full of stars. Almost all of them say the same things: fast, mobile, insurance friendly. None of that tells you whether the glass that goes into your car will be the right part, whether the camera behind it will see the road properly afterwards, or what the final bill will be. Those are the things worth asking about, and any honest glass company can answer them before it touches your vehicle.

Auto Glass Company Charlotte is a website of Impex Auto Glass. Impex is a North Carolina auto glass company based at 5641 David Cox Rd in Charlotte, with its drive-in shop at 8748 W Market St in Greensboro, and it provides mobile service across North Carolina, South Carolina and parts of Georgia. This site covers the south-east side of the Charlotte area: Matthews, Mint Hill, Stallings, Indian Trail, Monroe, Ballantyne and Waxhaw. Below are the questions we would ask any glass company, and the answers Impex gives.

Ask any companyWhy it mattersImpex’s answer
How do you know the glass fits my car?One model can take several different windshields, depending on cameras, sensors and other optionsVIN-based verification to make sure the correct part is ordered
Is calibration part of the job?A forward camera mounted on the glass may need aiming after replacementADAS calibration on site when the vehicle requires it
Is the quote the whole price?Delivery, fuel and disposal fees can appear on the final billQuotes fully inclusive, with no hidden fees, upsells, delivery charges, fuel fees or disposal fees
Who deals with my insurer?A glass claim is easier when the company handles the paperworkImpex works with all major insurance providers and can handle the claim for you
When can I drive? The adhesive needs time to bond before the car is drivenAbout one hour of work plus a short curing period; most cars are back on the road within two hours

If a company cannot answer the first two questions plainly, keep looking. A cheap windshield that is the wrong part, or a right part with a camera left unaimed, is not a saving.

Repair or replace

Chip, crack or a new windshield

Not every chip means a new windshield. Impex’s own rule is that a repair may be possible when the damage is small, shallow and away from the edges of the glass. ROLAGS, the windshield repair standard run by the National Windshield Repair Division, treats stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches as repairable. Many shops work to a tighter rule of thumb: damage smaller than a dollar bill, about six inches, is likely repairable, and a chip smaller than a quarter usually is. Those are rules of thumb, not laws, and a technician still has to see the glass.

  • Usually repairable: a single small chip or bullseye, away from the edge and out of the driver’s direct view.
  • Usually replaced: a crack that runs to the edge, damage right in front of the driver, several breaks at once, or a crack that keeps growing.
  • Worth asking about: damage in the area the forward camera looks through, since a repair there can affect what the camera sees.

North Carolina’s annual safety inspection (G.S. 20-183.3) checks the windshield wipers, not the glass itself, and no NC statute sets a crack size. Safety glass is required in every window (G.S. 20-135), and wipers must be in good working order (G.S. 20-127(a)). A crack in your line of sight is still a safety problem, and the windshield matters in a crash: the Auto Glass Safety Council calls it part of the vehicle’s passenger restraint system, which must be installed properly for airbags to deploy safely.

Cameras and radar

Calibration after a new windshield

More cars on I-485 and US 74 carry a camera behind the mirror every year. It reads lane lines and the car ahead for lane departure warning, collision braking and adaptive cruise control. Because it is mounted on the windshield, I-CAR lists removing the windshield as one of the events that may require the camera to be aimed again. Requirements differ by year, make and model, which is one more reason the VIN matters. Impex says it performs ADAS calibration on site immediately after windshield replacement, and that calibration takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours. The page on ADAS calibration in Charlotte explains static and dynamic calibration and what drives the cost.

Radar is a separate system. Forward radar usually sits in or behind the front bumper or grille, not in the windshield, so a windshield job alone does not normally touch it. It needs aiming after the radar, the bumper or the grille has been removed or repaired. See ADAS radar calibration in Charlotte for when that applies.

Insurance

How a glass claim usually works in North Carolina

In North Carolina, glass breakage falls under comprehensive coverage. The NC Department of Insurance lists ‘Breakage of glass’ and ‘Missiles or falling objects’ among comprehensive losses, paid less any deductible. North Carolina has no law that waives the deductible for glass, so unless your policy includes full glass coverage, your comprehensive deductible applies.

  • You choose the company. Under G.S. 58-3-180 your policy must let you select the repair service, and your insurer pays the same amount whichever you choose.
  • No SDIP points for glass. A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it adds no Safe Driver Incentive Plan points. Insurers may still look at how often you file claims.
  • Impex can handle it. Give Impex your insurer and policy number and it can deal with the claim for you.

Fleets

Glass for company vehicles

A van with a cracked windshield is a van that is not earning. Impex says it focuses on fleets and stocks common fleet glass, which shortens the wait for the parts business vehicles go through most. Impex is part of the Impex family of automotive companies, alongside Impex Auto Sales, Impex Chevy, Impex GM and the Impex Heavy Metal Division. For how a fleet account can work, from one contact to calibration on newer vans, see fleet auto glass in Charlotte.

Is Auto Glass Company Charlotte the same as Impex Auto Glass?

Yes. This is a website of Impex Auto Glass, a North Carolina auto glass company based at 5641 David Cox Rd, Charlotte, with its drive-in shop in Greensboro. It is not connected to any other business with Charlotte in its name. Impex’s main website is impexautoglass.com.

Do you come to Matthews, Monroe and Waxhaw?

Yes. On the south-east side of the Charlotte area Impex works as a mobile service, coming to your home, your work or wherever the vehicle is parked. See windshield replacement in Monroe and windshield replacement in Matthews.

How much does it cost to replace a windshield in North Carolina?

It depends on the vehicle and the glass: a windshield with a camera bracket, sensors or heating costs more than a plain one, and calibration may be needed after it. Impex quotes by VIN and puts everything on the quote, with no delivery, fuel or disposal fees added later.

Is a cracked windshield replaced for free in North Carolina?

Not by law. NC has no zero-deductible glass law. Comprehensive coverage normally pays for glass breakage less your deductible, unless your policy includes full glass coverage. Check your policy, or ask Impex to check with your insurer.

Will my insurance go up if I claim a cracked windshield?

A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it adds no SDIP insurance points. Insurers may still consider how often you file claims, so it is fair to ask your agent.

Does my car need calibration after a new windshield?

If it has a forward camera behind the windshield, it usually does. Requirements vary by year, make and model, so Impex checks the vehicle by VIN and tells you when you get the quote. See ADAS calibration in Charlotte.

Can my insurance company make me use its glass shop?

No. Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose who repairs your vehicle, and your insurer pays the same amount either way. If it recommends a shop, it must tell you that you are under no obligation to use it.

Is it legal to drive with a cracked windshield in NC?

No NC statute sets a crack size, and the annual safety inspection checks the wipers, not the glass. A crack in your line of sight is still a safety problem, and the windshield is part of how the car protects you in a crash, so get it looked at.
